THE PLACE OF MUSIC IN THE CHURCH

Music needs to find its rightful place….

“Song of Moses” Deut. 31
“Prophecy with lyres” 1 Chron. 25:1
“Admonishing with Psalms” Coloss. 3:16

B. To the Lord…expressing praise and worship.
“Sing to the Lord” Exodus 15:1
Devil’s Orchestra:
1 Chrons. 16:4 “To celebrate, thank, and praise…the people.
1 Chrons. 25:3 “Giving thanks and praising the Lord.”
Eph. 5:19 “Making Melody to the Lord.”
Rev. 5:9 “Sang a new song.”

THE PLACE OF THE MUSICIAN IN THE CHURCH

1. “Appointed’ 1 Chron. 25:1 164 covering for protection and valid direction.
2. He understands the spiritual and the soulful music.
3. He is himself; and presents himself, not someone else. Ezra 7:10.
4. He has a purpose. ‘Lord, what is your purpose for me? – Perhaps long and short term
purpose. Talents = Matt. 25:14. God multiplies what is used properly.
5. He is practiced. 1 Chron. 15:22, 25:27. Romans 12: 6-16. Diligent and skillful, not
relying on potential.
6. He is prepared. 1 Corin. 14:26. Bring the ministry. Skill without Divine life is empty.
Spiritual preparation without skill is inadequate.

POINTERS

A. Don’t draw attention to yourself.
B. Keep your goal ever before you.
C. Know to whom you are responsible, and submit.
D. Sort out musical differences away from the ministry. (place of ministry)
E. Demonstrate your ministry and unity. 2 Chron. 5:13
In Israel, the strength of the music ministry related directly to the spiritual condition of the nation. 2 Chron. 20:28, 23:18, 29:17. Nehemiah 12:46.

MINISTRY TO THE LORD

1 Chrons. 16:4 “To celebrate, thank, and praise…”

HOW IS PRAISE EXPRESSED?

Celebrate- bring to remembrance.
Thank – specific gratefulness (creation/people)
Praise – a declaration of appreciation of physical means.

1. Speaking Psalm. 71:8, 119:171.
2. Shouting Psalm 95: Psalm 100.
3. Singing Psalm 98:1 1 Corinth. 14:15 (spirit and understanding)
4. Clapping Psalm 47:1, Psalm 98, Isaiah 55 (Creation)
5. Dancing Psalm 149:3. Exodus 15:20.
6. Lifting hands Psalms 141, 134, 63:4.

POINTERS

A. All expressions of praise can become Rote.
B. Use Scripture to give understanding, not to prove the point, thus causing division.
C. Remember, God is a God of variety.

HOW ABOUT WORSHIP?

1. To worship, is to fellowship – to demonstrate a love relationship.
2. Exodus 15 – Praise to worship.
3. Psalm 95. Praise to worship.
4. Worship linked with sacrifice (Genesis 22; (alabaster box)
5. Worship is a spiritual experience. John 4.
6. To worship, is to know the one we worship.

THE PLACE OF WORSHIP LEADER IN THE CHURCH

1. A leader must first be a worshipper.
2. Should be imaginative, creative, and able to learn from mistakes.
3. Should have a clear goal and purpose.
4. Should inspire confidence in those around him.
5. Should be all encourager, not a driver Ps. 95 and 118.
6. There are three areas of sensitivity and responsibility:

a. To the Spirit – reliance, prepared, listening, ready to change.
b. To the People – the whole group
– setting boundaries, teaching and guiding, directing to God.
– use songs as a means to an end. Keep control. Be natural.

c. To the Music Team – establish authority.
– develop patterns.
– exercise submission.
– know goal, purpose.

THE PLACE OF THE MUSICIAN OR WORSHIP LEADER IN THE BODY
(Useful noted and quotes.)

‘Whatever talent, ability and so on, people have in music for e.g. when they come to the Lord, those things needs channeling through the Cross: God’s ways are different’” – John Harwood

“Fallen angels are in rebellion, but creation remains the same – their powers and potential are still there and operative. They are taking the talents God has given them, and using them selfishly – we are able to do the same.” So beware. Isaiah 14:12-15. The root of Lucifer’s sin was pride; he tried to usurp the Lord Jesus Christ’s position.” – John Harwood

“We must not be entangled by the enemy in any way – e.g. in our music.” 11 Cor. 10: 3-5. – John Harwood.

“Who is Lord? Who is given a piece of music saying who is Lord? Lordship implies worship, and servitude. Music and worship are not seen separately in Scripture.” 11 Chron. 5: 12-14, Ps. 22:3, Ps. 150, Rev. 5: 6-9. “Thy kingdom come, and will be done, on earth as in Heaven.” What goes on in Heaven? WORSHIP! Jesus will dance Zeph 3:17.

“Many Christians believe dance is sin- but the sort of dance they’ve seen in the world, probably is.”

“Worship and music are directly hinged together. You are worshipping anyway in music, even if it is unconsciously.” Romans 6:13, 16: “Yielding of members unto righteousness.” Even so, we yield the playing of our instruments unto righteousness, or the flesh of Satan.
Satan= Lucifer= the covering cherub of music in Heaven.

Ezck. 28: 13-14 (4 Rev 41: 18-20- That’s why Lucifer is so able to deceive. He can look like an angel of light. He was initially created that way. Lucifer means bright shining one.) Cherubin were on the mercy seat, guarded the gates of Eden. He was no flunkey – angel, or flunkey-demon.
FROM THESE VERSES: “Workmanship” – Hebrew: dutyship, office, ministry or employment.
“Tablets” – Tambourine, or any drum-like instrument, for holding socket for jewelry.
Percussive rhythmic instrument played by striking.

“Prepared” – Appointed

“The ministry of your musical, rhythmic beating, was appointed in thee, on the day that thou wast created” Ezek 28:13.
Notice the colors of the gemstones accompanying the music- these days drugs and drums are the stronghold of Satan’s power. The tambourine was in ancient time the basic percussive instrument. Mirian used it in rejoicing in God’s victory- That is its proper use. In Ghana, the d drum is called the “talking drum” with which they talk to ‘the gods.’ They then talk back to the people, and affect their lives. Luke 7:32, Sam 11: 6. God pipes to the nations. The Song of Songs is Jesus wooing us to Himself. The Satanic pied pipers also go around, (Dan. 34:7. Music was a key-note to get people into idolatry.” Rev. 18: 20-24 – John Howard.

“The Office of the Musician in the Body of Christ.”

Gen. 4: 24 Jubal- Hebrew word for string, meaning “carrying forth, reading forth, flowing.”
David ordained a whole new set of instruments to be used, harp and Psaltery- men’s response to God (if the shafer, the ancient ram’s horn which spoke of the voice of God to men (Josh 64.)
1Chron. 631, 1 Chron 9:33. Round the clock praise, supported full time to minister in praise to the Lord. 1 Chron 23:5 – 4,000, musicians etc. They taught praise too. This is happening in the Body of Christ across the world, and it is happening suddenly. People with technical skill and training have a hard time when they come to the Lord, getting priority of Him right. 11 Chron. 30:21- God didn’t mind it being loud. 11 Chr. 34:8, 12 – note, among musicians were overseers, leaders, elders. (Warning: Isaiah 28- Here musicians worshipped own skills.) We see the restored tabernacle of David. Amcs: 9:11, Acts 15:13-17. – John Harwood

“The Musicians Prophet”
1 Sam 10: 5-6. Music prophetic, life changing. 1 Sam 19: 20-24.
